Marivan city is the political-administrative center of Marivan, serving all areas of the region. The city also has the economic potential to trade goods due to its distance of 20 km from the border market.
Marivan city has a tourism capacity due to its natural and geographical features and the existence of Zivar Lake in the west of it (as the most significant natural wetland in Kurdistan province and the largest freshwater lake in Iran).
Although these features provide advantages for city development, they have faced the city with many problems in the physical, economic, social, and environmental fields.
In preparing the comprehensive plan of Marivan city, the consultant has paid attention to the economic role of the city and its position in the region. In addition to paying attention to economic issues, it has also emphasized preserving and reviving the natural ecosystem of the city. It has proposed the physical and communication development of the city in a way that meets the fundamental needs of citizens, namely housing and services in a healthy and efficient environment.

Therefore, the main goals of Marivan’s development plan are:

• Gain the role and position defined for the city in upstream documents

• The city’s revenue system relies on sustainable resources

• Take the advantage of sustainable natural ecosystem in and around the city

• Organized physical structure
